Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 in B minor, "Pathetique," IV: Adagio lamentoso
This movement is probably the most depressing and despairing piece of music written
by Tchaikovsky or any composer of that era. It ends not in hope but in undeniable defeat and
tragedy. It can make the listener cry even if he doesn't know Tchaikovsky's life story.
This final movement has long been interpreted as the composer's farewell to the world, or
rather, a suicide note, as he died a little over a week after the symphony was first performed.
