Untitled by Interpol

I am a big fan of Interpol, I feel that they have a really great sound and their style of music is a nice break from the dance genre that is popular now. Just because music doesn't have any lyrics doesn't mean that it is boring, and I think that this song demonstrates that ability to make good music without too many words (this song only has about 8 measures of a repeated line). Listen to the moving chord shifts Interpol creates in "Untitled" and think about how it makes you feel.

Farmer John- JD McPherson

This gem is from JD McPherson's album Signs and Signifiers, which NPR insists is "engineered to restore your faith in rock & roll", maybe because the dudes recorded the entire thing with vintage mics and amps. Active in Ann Arbor's swing dancing community, I can tell ya that this shit (like other 50's-type R'nR, R'nB, rock and rockabilly- think Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Chuck Berry) really is the best to get down to.

"For maximum dance potential, McPherson says that the album's producer, Jimmy Sutton, would walk around with a metronome and one of the songs in his head 'until he found the most danceable beats per minute'."

("JD McPherson: When a Punk Goes Vintage", NPR)

Other tracks to check out: "North Side Gal", "Scratching Circles", "Scandalous" (if you dance balboa, this one's for you!), "Your Love (All That I'm Missing)"

Fergalicious

I probably haven't listened to this song since that brief period in sixth grade when I liked to entertain my secret fantasies of becoming a hip-hop diva. Today, however, I was reminded of this wonderful music when Aaron Cohen fell asleep listening to his ipod in the library and I just couldn't resist the temptation of switching his sleepy-time music from Ed Sheeran to Fergie in an attempt to awaken him in a subtle yet hilarious manner. Needless to say, I couldn't let Aaron be the only one who got to take a trip down memory lane today, and decided to come home and have a listen so I could get a little reminder of all the things that made middle school so endearingly embarrassing. -Robin

Band On The Run -- Paul McCartney and Wings

Great song from shortly after his move from the Beatles to Wings in early 1970. Not his most successful of that era, but still a nice, relatively uplifting track, at least until you get past the beginning.
